Ecuador is located on the Earth's equatorial line so its territory is in both hemispheres. It comprises two distant spaces to each other: the northwest mainland territory of South America with some adjacent islands to the coast and the archipelago or island province of Galapagos, which is located 1000 kilometers from the Ecuadorian coast in the Pacific Ocean.
The main units of the Ecuadorian relief are the coastal plain to the north of the Gulf of Guayaquil, the section of the Andean Cordillera in the center of the country and a large sector of the Amazon plain located east of the country. To the southwest of the Gulf of Guayaquil, it is located the Guayas River where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. Very near Quito, the capital, over the Andean Cordillera, raises the Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano. The highest point of Ecuador is the Chimborazo volcano with 6313 meters and whose summit is the farthest place on earth core due to the elliptical silhouette of the planet.
The country has a tropical and humid climate, air quality is very good by the presence of large natural forests, national parks and the Amazon rainforest; 20% of the country is considered an ecological reserve. Due to the presence of the Andes and by the influence of the sea, continental Ecuador is climatically fragmented in various sectors. In addition, because of its equatorial location, each climate zone has only two seasons: wet and dry, mistakenly called "winter" and "summer" respectively, as occurs in other regions of the globe where for their next locations to the equator, occurring not true winters and summers.
Both the coast and in the east of the country, the temperature ranges between 20 ° C and 33 ° C, while in the mountains, this is usually between 3 ° C and 26 ° C by the height of the cities. The wet season runs between December and May on the coast, from November to April in the mountains and from January to September in the Amazon. The Galapagos Islands have a rather mild climate and temperature ranges between 22 and 32 ° C, approximately.
Flora and fauna
The Galapagos tortoise, the Condor and the Yasuni National Park are some of the national symbols of Ecuador. It has a rich fauna and flora so it is within the list of mega-diverse countries. Indeed, the biome jungle or tropical forest extends most of its territory, while in the west, adjacent to the coast, is also the biome dry forest and mangroves. Wildlife of Ecuador is extensive with a wide variation of species and countless types of tropical species such as macaws, toucans, turtles, frogs, etc. North of the province of Esmeraldas, a place known as Majagual, are the tallest mangroves in the world. In Cordilleran heights, they are scattered besides the forests and the Andean highlands. The western is part of biogeographical Chocó and the East from the Amazon.
The Galapagos Islands
The enchanted islands have a variety of endemic species, which at the time were studied by the famous English naturalist Charles Darwin, which allowed him to develop his theory of evolution by natural selection. The islands have gained worldwide fame because of the particularity of its wildlife, especially turtles known as Galapagos. In 1986 the sea surrounding the islands was declared marine reserve. UNESCO included Galapagos on the list of World Heritage in 1978, and in December 2001 this declaration for the marine reserve was expanded.
Yasuni National Park
The term Yasuni, without knowing its linguistic origin, means "holy land" as interpreted generally by communities in the area; The park extends over an area of 9820 square kilometers in the provinces of Pastaza, Napo and Orellana between the Napo River and Curaray river in the Amazon basin about 250 kilometers southeast of Quito. The park mainly jungle, was designated by UNESCO in 1989 as a biosphere reserve and is part of the territory where the Huaorani people and Tagaeri and Taromenane uncontacted groups are located.
